TG4
TG4 is a national television channel which celebrated its fifth birthday on 31 October 2001. Over 730,000 viewers tune into the channel each day. The daily Irish language programme schedule is its core service: over five hours of innovative quality programming in Irish supported by a wide range of material in other languages.
TG4 invests over €15m annually in original Irish programming from the independent production sector in Ireland. This investment supports 350 posts in small private sector companies throughout the island.
The channel provides a daily programme schedule in Irish for children and young people. This represents an attractive and entertaining daily point of contact with Irish in a context that is totally different to school.
The channel’s signal covers Ireland. It is receivable directly by aerial or on cable. The Good Friday Agreement undertakes to try to extend the TG4 signal throughout Northern Ireland.
TG4 was established and operates under the statutory umbrella of RTÉ. TG4 receives a programme supply of 365 hours of programming annually from RTÉ, at no cost to TG4.
The channel's energy, vision and emphasis on innovation and emerging talent has won its programmes critical acclaim, numerous awards and commendations at prestigious national and international festivals. Its programming has also gained significant sales on the international market for television programmes.
TG4 is a publisher/broadcaster. The station sources its programmes from independent production companies as well as from RTÉ, the national broadcaster for Ireland. It also broadcasts a range of public service programmes in English including live coverage of Dáil Éireann, the national parliament.
