St. Joseph's is a Patrician Brothers Catholic secondary college. Although in the city centre, it is situated in the relative quiet of Nuns' Island, with the River Corrib to the front and the Eglinton Canal mill race at the back. There are currently over 760 boys on roll, aged 12 to 18. Mr Peadar O'hIci, the first lay Principal, was recently appointed. It has a lay staff of 46 full-time and 3 part-time teachers. It also has two secretaries, a bursar and two caretakers. The school has a guidance counsellor, a learning support teacher and a Chaplain to help educate pupils in their personal, social, spiritual and career development.
