Sandyford Cricket Club

sandyfordcrickit1.jpgWelcome to Sandyford Cricket Club, in Dublin, Ireland. We are located in Sandyford, a suburb 7 miles Southwest of the city centre. Our home is in Marlay Park at the foot of the Dublin mountains.

In April 1997 Sandyford Cricket Club became the first cricket club in Ireland to go 'online' when it published its first website. Suddenly clubs from all over the globe were making contact with us especially from India and Pakistan. We have even added access to our site via mobile phone.

All this is a far cry from 1984 when a couple of disgruntled local brothers from Sandyford Village - Brendan, Brian and Tiernan McConville founded the club. Disgruntled because no other club would give them a game, so they took their ball and bat and headed for Marlay Park to form their own club.

Since then the club has gone from strength to strength now fielding 3 men’s teams and 3 junior teams. The junior teams are playing at U-15, U13 and U-11; the future of the club seems to be in solid hands. Our Internet capabilities have enabled us to attract players from all over the globe who are visiting or working in Dublin. We can claim to have players from Pakistan, India, Australia, New Zealand, England, Scotland, USA and West Indies and recently we added a Welshman to our ranks. The only major cricket-playing nation we are missing is Sri Lanka. We even have Dutch citizen!!

Needless to say cricket is not a major sport in Ireland so attracting players from overseas nations is helps us advance the club enormously. However we are determined to build the base of the club around local people, as with any club it is the dedication of a small number of local people who keep the club running properly.

Sandyford's home ground is in Marlay Park opposite St. Columbas College. During the height of summer we have one of the most picturesque grounds in Leinster, although recently we have had the inconvenience of a certain 'motorway' being driven through our backyard. The area is a cricket-designated area; cricket has been played here for 15 years.

Sessions are on Thursdays at 9pm and newcomers are always welcome at Sandyford Cricket Club, we can never have enough members. All standards are accommodated, if you have never played before - it doesn't matter.

Back to the Internet - visit us at www.sandyfordcc.org where you can find more information on the club. If you are interested in joining the club you would be most welcome, contact us the details below. Currently our oldest member is nearly 60, our youngest 11!!

Mens - Cliff Kennedy 2956148 or John Fennell at 2955481
Juniors - Brendan McConville on 4902446 or David Gray at 4943852
