Galway Fire Service
 The first fire station was in Bowling Green, and the first fire engine was bought in 1928 a Merryweather.
It remained in service until 1966 and was then exchanged for a redundant turntable ladder by Glasgow fire service. It was restored in the fire service workshops in Glasgow and presented to the Museum of Transport in Glasgow in 1968, where it is their pride and joy. It had solid wheels and was known as a "retained" fire brigade, not a permanent one.
The chairman of the U.D.C. at the time was Joe Young, the town steward was Captain Tim Duggan. Billy Binns was the town engineer, and Frank Dolan was appointed as a full time driver of the fire brigade.
The Dolan family have been involved with the fire brigade since its inception through Frank Dolan, his sons Jim, Nicko, George, Sonny and Joe and now the third generation in Frankie and Dermot. Nicko still carries the Galway Mace on ceremonial occasions - Fire brigade duty.
Next year, the Galway Fire Brigade will be 75 years old and they continue to serve the local community effectively and sensitively.
