Dublin Airport

dublinairport.gifDublin Airport experienced yet another record passenger throughput figure in 2000, with over 13.8 million passengers using the airport. This represents an 8% increase, making it the seventh consecutive year that traffic grew by over 1 million passengers. During the year 30 scheduled airlines served a total of 75 destinations.

Of the additional 1 million passengers handled at Dublin Airport, the European market contributed 65% of the growth, followed by the UK market at 19%.

Transatlantic Traffic

US traffic figures reached an all time high with just under 1 million passengers. All routes enjoyed strong demand. One of the main contributors to the 16% increase in the transatlantic sector was the Dublin-Washington (Baltimore) route, launched in September by Aer Lingus. Other growth contributors were additional Delta services to New York and Atlanta and increased Aer Lingus frequencies to Boston and Los Angeles.

European Traffic

The European markets also recorded a growth of 16%, with passengers on this sector numbering 4.6 million. Both scheduled and charter traffic enjoyed a significant increase. A greater choice of destinations was also offered as new scheduled routes to Billund (Maersk) and Oslo (SAS) and Munich and Stockholm (both Aer Lingus) were introduced and capacity increased on existing routes to Rome, Prague, Budapest, Brussels and Paris.

U.K. Traffic

UK passenger numbers reached 7.4 million, an increase of 3% on 1999. Aer Lingus carried 40% of the sector's traffic, Ryanair 39%, British Midland 13% and other airlines 8%. London traffic was up 1% and continued to dominate, accounting for 60% of all cross-channel business. UK provincial traffic recorded a 5% increase for the year.

Domestic Traffic

Dublin's domestic traffic grew by 8% mainly driven by the strong growth on the Dublin-Cork route.
